MALIBU PIER RESTAURANT & BAR

INTERIOR DESIGN - GRAPHIC DESIGN - ART CONSULTING

From re-concepting the Malibu Beach Supply Co. into a store that would appeal to a fisherman and movie star alike, to providing the the visual touches to the Malibu Pier Restaurant & Bar that garnered praise in publications including Architectural Digest, the Malibu Pier has been a once in a lifetime project requiring creativity, savvy, leadership, tenacity and the responsibility of a beloved State Park under my watch.

ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST

“California surf culture was born on this beach,” says Joshua Klein, a visual consultant who worked on the design ...

C MAGAZINE

"We wanted it to feel like  a beach house, and make it an ode to Malibu" says Klein, who worked for the likes of Ralph Lauren in New York.

ART

Worked with the DENNIS HOPPER ART Trust to acquire a photograph of JANE FONDA on a local beach as she prepared for her role in Barberella.

Consulted in acquisition & placement of pieces by David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, Leroy Grannis & Alexander Calder that were unified by a Malibu thread.

DETAILS

From designing logos & menus with the daily surf report, to collaborating with a local potter to create ceramics whose colors married the earth & ocean palette of the pier, worked tirelessly to obtain "little" details gaining critical recognition.

LIGHTING

Was handed the responsibility to conceptualize and implement a central light motif for the dining room.  Locating an artist in Holland working with hemp rope, was able to source custom lengths of rope lights which I then wrapped and strung through the rafters.  The look was at once nautical, dynamic & sophisticated.

BAR

Inspired by a Chis Craft boat, the original boat house bar was restored back to stained wood & gloss white.

Being Malibu, the rustic needed bawdy and a surfboard by artist Richard Phillips made the point.
